    Not every skin concern responds the same way, and knowing the difference helps set expectations.

    Acne scarring

    Where RF microneedling does some of its most impressive work. Rolling and boxcar scars are essentially collagen deficits, and rebuilding collagen in that space lifts them from underneath. Deep ice pick scars respond less predictably and may need a different approach.

    Enlarged pores

    Do not actually shrink, but they read smaller when the tissue surrounding them firms up. That firming is the collagen at work.

     RF Microneedling FAQs

    A topical anesthetic is applied for about one hour before treatment. If you prefer, you can apply numbing cream before coming into the office. A group of micro pins are injected into the skin at various depths to stimulate healing. You may feel a prickling, snapping or stinging sensation.

    Downtime is minimal. Skin may be red for 4-5 days following treatment. The skin may peel or itch as it is healing. Makeup can be applied the following day. Prick marks on the skin can last for 3-5 days.

    Typically, it takes 3-5 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart to achieve best results. Maintenance twice yearly is recommended.

    Visible results can be seen within days of treatment, after redness has subsided. Most noticeable results appear 3 months after treatment as collagen is regenerating.

    Hyperpigmentation may occur in certain skin types. Settings are adjusted and treatment is approached in a conservative manner to limit this side effect.

    RF Microneedling Pre-Treatment Care

    • Come to the office makeup free.
    • Avoid alcohol 24 hours prior to treatment.
    • Stop exfoliating the skin for 1 week prior to treatment.

    • If you have a history of labial herpes (cold sores) and are being treated around the mouth, we recommend starting Valacyclovir 24 hours before treatment and continuing until completion (14 days) to prevent reactivation of the virus. We recommend an oral antibiotic in those who have a history of folliculitis with previous treatment.
    • Avoid using anti-inflammatory medications (ie: ibuprofen, aspirin) for 1 week prior to your procedure.
    • Avoid fish oil, gingko biloba, garlic, flax oil, cod liver oil, vitamin A, vitamin E, or any other supplements/herbals for 1 week before treatment as they can increase bleeding.
    • Avoid retinoids and glycolic acid 1 week prior to treatment.

    • If your skin has been sunburned, or if artificial tanner has been used on the areas to be treated, wait 4 weeks before receiving this treatment.

    RF Microneedling Post-Treatment Care

    • Avoid special events for 1 week as you may experience redness and flaking of the skin.
    • Avoid strenuous exercise, hot tubs, saunas for 1-2 days after treatment or until fully healed.
    • You may see small  pinpricks for a few days after treatment and slight redness for up to 1 week. Do not pick these areas.

    • Tylenol is fine for pain. Avoid ibuprofen for 48 hours after treatment.
    • Avoid retinoids, hydroquinone, vitamin C, glycolic acid for 2 weeks after treatment and completion of healing.

    • Mineral-based makeup can be applied 1 day after treatment.
    • Moisturize twice daily in the morning and evening with a water-based moisturizer.
    • We highly recommend Alastin Skincare’s Regenerating Skin Nectar for post-procedure care. It soothes the skin immediately, reduces redness and discomfort, and works with your treatment to stimulate collagen and elastin production.
    • Keep your skin hydrated at all times and drink plenty of water.
    • A gentle cleanser is ok to use. We carry Alastin Gentle Cleanser.
    • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after treatment.
    • Have cold compresses on hand to help soothe the skin.
    • Avoid exfoliating treated areas for 4 weeks following treatment.

    • Avoid direct sun exposure for 4 weeks post treatment. If you plan to be outdoors, use at least 30 SPF daily. If you need a good sunscreen, we carry Alastin SilkSHIELD Mineral Sunscreen.
