This laser resurfaces the skin, much like its cousin the CO2 laser, but light penetration is not as deep. Generally, recovery is quicker with less downtime compared to CO2. Each serves its purpose depending on the severity of the condition(s) being treated. It works great on fine lines, skin texture, pigmentation, scarring, mild laxity by boosting collagen and elastin production.

Erbium YAG laser improves the appearance of:

  • Acne scars
  • Sun spots
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Skin texture
  • Dull skin
  • Mild laxity
  • Pore size
A topical numbing cream is applied to the face for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. If you prefer, you can apply numbing cream before coming into the office. The skin will feel warm. The length of treatment varies on the size of the area being treated, but generally it takes about 20-40 minutes.
The skin will appear red and feel like a sunburn. While you are healing, some areas may crust over and peel. The skin may look bronzed and feel like sandpaper, this is normal and expected during the healing process. A fan may help soothe the skin. In some patients, mild swelling after the procedure may occur. As the skin continues to heal, it may be itchy and peel. It will change from shades of red, to brown, then back to your natural skin pigmentation.
Generally 3 treatments, one every 4 weeks with maintenance 1-2 times yearly. Downtime is generally 1 week.
Improvement is seen immediately after healing and will continue 4-6 weeks after treatment as collagen production is occurring.
If the settings are too aggressive and delivery of heat is too high, scarring and pigmentation may occur. Pre and post treatment care is important for recovery. This type of laser is safest in skin types I-IV.
